2023 Volkswagen Golf GTI The Volkswagen Golf GTI represents the first class in the hot hatch segment, and after decades of existence, it is still the best car in its class of fun-to-drive small cars. The Golf GTI has been redesigned for 2022 with exterior design updates and more modern interior appointments, but it still retains the fun-to-drive character that makes it a performance icon. The engine has a 2.0-liter turbo with 241 hp and powers the front wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission or – depending on our choice – a six-speed manual transmission.

  • The cabin is characterized by spacious space in the front and back, and like all versions of the GTI since the beginning of its name

  • There is plenty of cargo space under the tailgate. Whether you're new to the world of fast cars with boxes on wheels or you've been a loyal GTI fan since the early days, this latest version is fun and carries the same enthusiastic spirit that made the original a huge success in global markets.

  • For those looking for stronger performance, you can check out the Golf R (which will be reviewed separately), as it comes with 315 horsepower, a standard all-wheel drive system, and great car control capabilities.

What's new for the 2023 Volkswagen Golf GTI?

The only new for 2023 is the addition of a 40th Anniversary model to the Golf GTI lineup to celebrate 40 years since the Golf GTI arrived in the United States. This limited production model joins the S, SE and Autobahn models, and is a trim level above the S model.

When deciding which model to buy a Golf GTI, the mid-level SE model seems to be the best value. The standard six-speed manual transmission can be swapped out for a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic for an additional $800. We prefer to control the switch ourselves, so we'll avoid paying this extra cost.

Compared to the entry model, the SE adds a powerful 480-watt Karman/Hardon audio system, a striking illuminated grille, enhanced infotainment features, and a sunroof. It can also be equipped with leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and memory settings for the driver's seat, but that means ditching the GTI's traditional cloth seats and their squarer layout. And we never will.

Engine, transmission and performance

The 2023 Golf GTI is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, generating 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. This means an increase of 13 hp and 15 lb-ft compared to the previous model. However, this power is transmitted to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox as an option. We tested a GTI version with the automatic gearbox, which featured clever shifts and helped the car accelerate to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds – 0.7 seconds quicker than the previous Rabbit model with the automatic gears.

Not only is the new GTI quicker in vertical transitions, we credit the redesigned suspension, electronic limited-slip switch, and torque distribution by the brakes for increased driving fun on back roads and track.

The VW's brilliantly modified chassis deserves more praise than ever, thanks to its sharp response and ride comfort quality that's neither too firm nor too soft. The latter quality is experienced in the top-spec Autobahn model, which comes with adjustable adaptive shock absorbers and a set of 19-inch wheels (18-inch wheels come as standard) fitted with summer tyres.

Nothing puts a damper on enthusiastic driving like a soft brake pedal, but the GTI delivers strong feedback and notable stopping power, stopping solidly from 70 mph in 151 feet.

Fuel economy and fuel consumption in reality

The most efficient Golf GTI is the automatic transmission model, earning ratings of 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. If you choose the six-speed manual, it will reduce city fuel efficiency by about a mile. When we road-tested a Golf GTI equipped with the automatic on our 75 mph highway fuel economy test, part of our comprehensive testing program, it beat the EPA's estimates and achieved 38 mpg.

Interior design, comfort and payload

Inside, the Golf GTI features a more modern design than before with some traditional elements. The dashboard features two large displays – a 10.3-inch instrument display and a 10.0-inch touchscreen – that share a glossy black frame. The three-spoke steering wheel features a dramatically convex rim and tactile buttons.

The front bolster seats feature red detailing around their outer edges and the famous speckled stripes on their upper and lower cushions – a GTI trademark over the decades. Unfortunately, unlike the high-quality environment of the previous generation, the new interior is subject to some cheap touches and hard plastics. Visibility of the road up front is improved thanks to the lower hood, but we'd prefer a simple array of analogue gauges rather than an overly configurable digital setup. The new GTI's dimensions increase by one inch overall and the wheelbase rises by 0.6 inches, further enhancing impressive passenger comfort and cargo space.

Entertainment and communications system

The GTI's infotainment system is operated by a 10.0-inch touchscreen as standard. Unfortunately, they are mostly operated by touch-sensitive triggers rather than more intuitive buttons and knobs. In addition to a few charging ports, the system includes compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These familiar phone apps and existing menu structures will help balance out VW's busy and potentially distracting interface.

Safety and driver assistance features

The GTI comes with a range of driver assistance technologies as standard and also as optional options. VW's IQ.Drive system is available on all models, and in addition to traditional features like automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assist, it also includes Emergency Assist, which stops the vehicle and turns on the hazard lights if no driver input is detected. For more information about the Golf GTI crash test results, please visit the NHTSA and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Among the main safety features:

Advanced automatic braking system with pedestrian detection as standard.
Lane departure warning and lane keeping assist are standard.
Availability of adaptive cruise control system.
